Find a word

How we write

  1. Meanings: every sense is checked against established English usage before it appears. Where a word has several senses, the most common comes first.
  2. Origins: we include a word history only when it is well documented, and say so when an origin is uncertain.
  3. Examples: example sentences are our own, written to show how the word is really used.
  4. Drafting: AI writing tools help with first drafts. A person then reviews every page, checks the facts and rewrites anything unclear.
  5. Balance: for political, social and religious words we explain how different groups use the word, without taking a side.
  6. Updates: language changes, and so do our pages. We fix reported mistakes quickly.
